Paul Ferguson has two selections for us on Sunday; Mississippi River 3:25 Clonmel and Akeed Mofeed 4:20 Curragh
John Oxx saddled Alamshar (2002), Azamour (2003) and Sea The Stars (2007) to win the Juddmonte Beresford Stakes in recent years and the County Kildare handler can strike again today with the exciting Akeed Mofeed (4:20).
The Dubawi colt looked a potential star when beating Athens, who has won since and re-opposes here, earlier in the month at Leopardstown. The step up to a mile looks sure to suit and it will be disappointing if he can’t enhance his reputation this afternoon.
The selection, who is a best price 25/1 for the Derby next June, was trading at Evs with Hills this morning.
At Clonmel, Rebel Fitz sets a fair standard in the novice hurdle, but it is worth taking a chance on debutant Mississippi River (3:25) who receives 7lb from the favourite.
John Kiely’s six-year-old really ought to have beaten
Rebel Fitz in a Galway bumper last October, after which he hacked up at Cork. On his third start he reversed form with Rebel Fitz (4th), on worse terms, when runner-up in a Grade 2 at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting.
The selection, who was available at 11/4 with Stan James on Sunday morning, went off the boil on his last two starts, but he remains a smart prospect and, with Kiely saddling Frawley to win on his hurdles debut yesterday, he is fancied to strike at the first time of asking.
Sunday’s selections:
3:25 Clonmel: Mississippi River 11/4 Stan James
4:20 Curragh: Akeed Mofeed (Evs Hills)
