Live on Skysports 2: Mon 16.00: Novak Djokovic is Skybet’s 5/4 favourite to do the business and win the US Open and Sharapova is 6/1 (Coral).
Novak Djokovic suffered his 2nd defeat of the year, this time to Andy Murray, when he lost in Cincinnati (through retirement) but he will look to roar back into the fray at Flushing Meadows.
Skybet go 5/4 about the Serb and he is well worth backing at that price. He has the form, the attitude, the ability and should have the fitness. The feeling is he may have been extremely cautious in his recent retirement against Murray, saving himself for the main event in New York and he is the man to back.
Andy Murray makes the next strongest claim. He comes in with a win in Cincinnati, and a very good performance to boot, and he can be backed at 11/2 with Blue Square. Murray is in a good place right now and he really does have a chance this year.
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will always have to be considered at Majors but this year they both have question marks. Nadal’s fitness is surely a worry going into the US Open and Federer just isn’t his oldself. Nadal is still 2nd fav, Totesport putting 5/1 on him, while Federer can be backed at 6/1 with Paddy Power.
Of the rest, Juan Martin del Potro is 18/1 with Boylesports, Mardy Fish 33/1 with and the talented Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 35/1 with Betdaq.
In the women’s event, chaos reigns as Caroline Wozniacki remains coachless (20/1, Ladbrokes), Li Na (20/1, Totesport) and Petra Kvitova (10/1, William Hill) are low on confidence and Kim Clijsters has withdrawn. This leaves Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova to pick up the pieces.
After being bumped to 28th seed following Clijsters’ withdrawl, Serena must be considered a threat but at 13/8 () is an extremely short fav, though she does play her best stuff here nowadays. Sharapova must be factored in to the betting. At 6/1 (Coral), she is the best bet and should definitely be eyeing a place in the final.
A double on Djokovic and Sharapova meanwhile, comes in at more than 14/1 with Coral.
