Paul Ferguson has two selections for us on Saturday; Brown Panther at 15.05 and Dumbarton at 17.20, both at Newbury Compare odds and bet.
Newbury stages a corking renewal of the Group 3 CGA Geoffrey Freer Stakes this afternoon, in which Brown Panther (3:05) is taken to bounce back from his disappointing fifth in the German Derby and confirm Royal Ascot form with Census.
Michael Owen’s Shirocco colt looked a Group class performer when running away with the competitive King George V Stakes, in which Census was 6 lengths second, and the change to front-running tactics didn’t appear to work at Hamburg last time.
Today’s contest should be strongly run so Richard Kingscote will be able to settle the smooth-traveller towards the rear and the step up in trip promises to bring about further improvement.
With a bit of ease in the ground, conditions appear ideal for Brown Panther to put himself right in the mix for the St Leger. He was trading at 6/1 on Friday evening.
Later on the card, the well-bred Dumbarton (5:20) is fancied to land the Collingwood First Class Service Ltd Handicap for Sir Michael Stoute, who won the race 12 months ago with Sharedah.
A Danehill Dancer colt out of the smart mare Scottish Stage, he finished strongly to account for no more than an ordinary field in a Windsor maiden over a mile, but he gave the strong impression there was plenty more to come, especially now he is up in trip.
An opening handicap mark of 84 may well underestimate his ability and he can defy joint top-weight under Jimmy Fortune, who is deputising for the injured Ryan Moore.
Saturday’s selections:
15:05 Newbury: Brown Panther
17:20 Newbury: Dumbarton
