Paul Ferguson begins his Goodwood tips with two selections; Modun (2.00 Good) and Fiorente (2.35 Good). Compare odds and bet
Sir Michael Stoute has saddled the winner of the Gordon Stakes four times in the past decade and the trainer can strike again this afternoon with Fiorente (2:35).
Un-raced at two, the Monsun colt got off the mark at the second time of asking at Newbury in May and he ran a cracker when runner-up to Nathaniel in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot last time.
The form of that race is particularly strong with the winner landing Saturday’s King George, while fourth and firth home Mijhaar and Fulgur battled out the finish of a strong handicap at Newmarket’s July meeting.
Slumber actually got closer to Nathaniel at Chester and also ran well at Royal Ascot last time, but the selection is less exposed and appeals as the type to continue progressing at a rate of knots.
Fiorente is following the same path as Conduit, who won this for the same connections in 2008 having finished runner up in the King Edward the time before, and Ballymacoll Stud could be in for a memorable start to the 2011 Glorious Goodwood meeting as Modun (2:00) can take the opening Bet365.com Stakes.
Having put him up on all four starts since winning his maiden at Folkestone last September, regular readers of my column will know I’m a big fan of this horse.
An impressive winner at Newbury in April, where he looked a potential Group performer, the son of King’s Best floundered in the soft ground at Royal Ascot but proved that run all wrong when a clear second in the John Smith’s Cup.
This looks an easier assignment and, off just a 2lb higher mark, he is taken to get back to winning ways and get the meeting off to the best possible start for Ryan Moore and Sir Michael Stoute.
