Paul Ferguson has two selections on Saturday; Modun in the 3.15 at York and Long Awaited ten minutes later at Chester. Compare odds and bet
The weather will play a big part in Saturday’s feature events all around the country and it is very much hoped that the rain stays away from York ahead of the 52nd John Smith’s Cup.
Modun (3:15) was hugely impressive when making a wining return at Newbury in April and was heavily backed to land the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot but the son of King’s Best was a massive disappointment, beating just three home.
The soft ground was the obvious explanation and, back on a quicker surface, he is worth another chance at landing a valuable handicap before heading in to Group company.
If the rain arrives, it maybe worth waiting for another day with the four-year-old, as this looks very competitive and the winner will need everything in his favour.
Pekan Star has been favourite all week and, after a pleasing return over course-and-distance, he looks an obvious type. Roger Varian’s colt looks sure to run a big race and the trainer saddles the most interesting runner at Chester in the shape of Long Awaited (3:25).
The three-year-old was impressive in beating a subsequent winner at Ripon on his seasonal return and, though he needs to take a big step forward here facing his elders on his handicap debut, he could be up to defying an opening mark of 83.
The Pivotal colt handles cut in the ground and Andrea Atzeni has a tremendous strike-rate for Varian this year, riding four winners from seven rides (57%).
Saturday’s selections:
3:15 York: Modun (9/1 Hills)
3:25 Chester: Long Awaited
