Final Set For Five Sets At SW19

Live on BBC 1: Sun 14.00: Rafa Nadal is 8/13 with Betfred to defend his Wimbledon title against Novak Djokovic but it could go all the way.

Having broken Andy Murray’s heart yet again on Friday, securing an impressive 3-1 centre court success over the disappointed Scot, Rafael Nadal is odds-on at 8/13 with Betfred to rack up his third Wimbledon title and his eleventh Grand Slam overall but he comes up against a formidable opponent in the shape of the in-form Novak Djokovic.

The Serb went on a 41-match winning streak before losing to Roger Federer in the French Open, his only defeat in 2011 and he is the only player to have beaten Nadal on more than ten occasions. Paddy Power’s 11/8 for Djokovic to win at SW19 for the first time therefore isn’t without appeal, although he has lost to the Spaniard in the pair’s two grass court meetings.

Newly installed as world number one, regardless of today’s result, Djoko has shown his battling qualities so far in the tournament, suddenly upping his game against both Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Bernard Tomic when the tide appeared to be turning in favour of his opponent but the same can also be said of Nadal, who lost the first set to Murray in the last four.

Subsequently, it’s hard to separate the pair in what looks likely to be a close encounter, so punters can perhaps forget about a straight sets success for either the defending champion or the Serb, rated at 3/1 (bet365) and 6/1 (Ladbrokes) respectively to prevail 3-0.

It took four sets to settle the duo’s 2010 US Open final in Nadal’s favour, as a total of 40 games were played and Coral chalk up a lower tally than 42.5 at 10/11 on this occasion. However, it could be closer than that Flushing Meadows showdown and a fifth set is a distinct possibility so aiming higher than 42.5 at 10/11 with Totesport is the call.

Meanwhile, with little between the two and huge potential for a marathon contest, both men are worth considering to edge it 3-2. make Nadal 5/1 to triumph by that scoreline and Djokovic is identically priced, this time by Stan James; alternatively, it’s 21/10 with William Hill for the mouth watering contest to be a five-set thriller.
