Live on Eurosport: from Mon 23rd: In-form Novak Djokovic is 6/4 with Betfred to win the French Open and end Rafael Nadal’s dominance.
Novak Djokovic has yet to taste defeat in 37 matches in 2011 and got the better of clay court king Rafael Nadal in the final of the Rome Masters at the weekend (to add to the Madrid win), so he has to be considered a threat in next week’s French Open.
The Serb is a 6/4 chance at Betfred to add the year’s second Grand Slam to his victory in January’s Australian Open and it looks to be between him and Nadal (11/10, Coral), going for a 6th title in 7 years, at Roland Garros. Added incentive for Djokovic is that a tournament win here will beat John McEnroe’s previous record of 42 matches unbeaten and Novak Djokovic has to be seriously considered, despite a reasonably poor record at Roland Garros.
Bookies don’t really give anyone else a hope, indeed, even 2009 champ Roger Federer is as high as 16/1 at Sportingbet while Andy Murray is a 20/1 shot with Stan James and Totesport post 33/1 against red-dirt specialist David Ferrer.
With Nadal and Djokovic such clear favourites, a case can be made for Paddy Power’s evens posted against the two men contesting the final and in Stan James’ betting without that pair, Ferrer is a tempting 8/1 and Robin Soderling also possesses some appeal at 7/1. Soderling has had a poor run up to the French Open in 2011 but then again he did in 2009 and 2010 and he reached the final in both years.
