Bees to Sting Spireites?

With new boss Martin Allen installed, Barnet are big price at 14/5 (Totesport) to beat Chesterfield as they look to swerve the drop.

In what looks like a last throw of the dice as they seek to preserve their League Two status, Barnet have turned to former boss Martin Allen, who has eight matches to save the ailing Bees. ‘Mad Dog’ has a huge job on his hands, given that Barnet are three points adrift of Burton, who have four games in hand, and seven points behind the likes of Hereford and Northampton, both of whom have also played fewer games.

Nevertheless, it could be worth taking a leap of faith this weekend and backing Allen to make an instant impact at Underhill, even though they come up against, of all teams, league leaders Chesterfield.

At present, it’s hard to argue that the Spireites aren’t the best team in the division, after all, only a disastrous run would prevent them claiming the title. Furthermore, John Sheridan’s men have lost only six matches all season, however, three of those defeats have come in the last six weeks, against strugglers Burton and Morecambe, then Crewe, who prevailed a fortnight ago in Chesterfield’s last away game.

It’s not beyond the realms of possibility then that they could go down in North London, especially against a team in last chance saloon with a new manager at the helm and a modest flutter on Barnet is therefore worth considering at a big price of 14/5 with Totesport.

Bury have racked up an impressive ten wins on the road this season and indeed the second-placed Shakers have actually gleaned the majority of their points away from home. They head to stuttering Port Vale this weekend and 888Sport make Alan Knill’s men a tasty 17/10 to collect another three-point haul at the expense of the managerless play-off chasers.

The Valiants have won just four of their last fifteen (but none of their last four) to fall out of the top seven and their inconsistency cost Jim Gannon his job after just 74 days in charge. They also needed a last-minute goal on Tuesday just to nick a point against struggling Hereford and are a team to oppose up against such strong travellers.

At Moss Rose, battling Macclesfield are 11/5 () to extend their unbeaten run to six by beating Stevenage but as Borough are in decent shape, having won their last four, a home win looks a touch risky so it’s perhaps a better idea to focus on a wager that should be helped by the good form of the two teams, specifically William Hill’s 19/20 for both sides to get on the scoresheet.

Recommended Bets:
Barnet to beat Chesterfield – 14/5 (Totesport)
Bury to beat Port Vale – 17/10 (888Sport)
Both teams to score in Macclesfield v Stevenage – 19/20 (William Hill)
