However, HUMOUR ME RENE (9.20), a course and distance winner, has outstanding claims for shrewd trainer George Baker and is well worth the long wait. Humour Me Rene went down with all guns blazing at the track on Thursday night, is clearly in great heart and compensation awaits.
Highlight at Uttoxeter is the totesport Midlands National and LE BEAU BAI (3.00) arrives fresh after a light campaign. A previous course winner, Richard Lee’s stayer was quietly fancied for the race 12 months ago but was never sighted on heavy ground behind winner Synchronised. His last outing at Haydock, when third to Silver By Nature and Ballyfitz, gives grounds for optimism off his featherweight.
Barry Hills is emerging from winter hibernation and his runners are always worth noting at this time of year. FAILASOOF (4.40) will be at cramped odds in the maiden at Lingfield but deserves to be after a highly respectable third in a Kempton maiden in the autumn when friendless in the betting ring.
Mark Johnston’s former jockey Keith Dalgleish, who had to quit the game due to weight problems, has taken over Ian Semple’s old yard at Carluke, Lanarkshire and FREQUENCY (1.50) is his first venture south to Lingfield. Dalgleish acquired the horse from Michael Wigham after an unlucky effort over course and distance nine days ago and Joe Fanning is a good booking on this tricky but talented customer.
