Live on Skysports 1: Wed 19.00: Angus Loughran previews this week’s WGC Matchplay Championship, starting on Wednesday.
Tiger Woods is not often not the market leader for any event he plays and if he were to win this weeks World Golf Championship there will be many after timers who will rue they didnt take the 16/1 available with Totesport. I will not be one of the after timers as this is just too big a price not to take in an event he cleary loves.
The downside here is 18 hole matchplay is a real lottery and Woods hasnt won since the Australian Open in 2009.
Robert Allenby played some great golf in Los Angeles last week and at 70/1 (Stan James) looks a value outsider, his match against Ross Fisher looks one of the pick of the first round.
I think 50/1 (Paddy Power) is a massive price on South African Charl Schwartzel who is a gritty matchplay player while Matteo Mannesero is the youngest ever player to play in a World Golf Championship, he is currently outside the top 50 and is desperate to play Augusta again in April. He has a tough match against Steve Stricker but at 125/1 with Sportingbet is an insulting price to go all the way.
This event starts on Wednesday (14.25 1st tee, 19.00 on TV) and is straight knockout and it’s well worth taking on the short price favourites in early round matches. Of the Brits, Paul Casey has an obvious chance (14/1 fav, bet365) but Ian Poulter, teeing off first with Stewart Cink, at 33/1 with Ladbrokes is the value.
Good luck
Angus Loughran
