Live On Sky Sports: Sun: 13:15 & 15:30. The Sunday Maill’s OddsFellow aka betrescue’s Chris Hutcheon previews Sunday’s televised Scottish Cup ties at Dundee and Berwick.
Celtic have been on the receiving end of plenty of cup upsets, defeats to Ross County, Caley Thistle and Clyde in recent years immediately springing to mind, while one of the competitions biggest ever shocks came in 1967 when Sammy Reid’s goal gave Berwick Rangers a 1-0 victory over Rangers.
So can the Wee Gers claim another Old Firm scalp and become the latest team to humble the Hoops? Punters that believe they can, are able back their hunch at 18/1 with but sadly for the Shielfield Park faithful, the gap between the clubs is just too big.
Boosted by their 2-0 Ibrox triumph last time out, Neil Lennon’s men are a banker in the Borders but at 1/8 with Stan James, they’re hardly a money-spinner so it’s worth seeking value elsewhere. Even giving the hosts a goal start in Coral’s handicaps only pushes Celtic out to 2/5 but there’s a bit more cash to be made by backing the Hoops to prevail by at least three, an outcome Paddy Power price at 10/11.
Berwick have never scored past Celtic in four attempts and that run looks set to continue, Partybets quoting Lennon’s troops at 4/5 to win ‘to nil’, and more specifically Stan James offer 7/1 for the visitors to notch three times without reply.
In attack, Georgios Samaras is well-fancied at 3.25 (9/4) with Betdaq to follow up his brace against Rangers with the opener in this one while those believing in the romance of the cup can stick a quid on Berwick striker Alan Brazil at 18/1 (Betfred) to send the Wee Gers fans into raptures by handing his side a shock 1-0 lead.
At Dens Park, an upset could be on the cards as in-form Division One battlers Dundee tackle Motherwell. The Dark Blues have won six in a row while the Steelmen are winless in half-a-dozen so the hosts catch the eye at 11/5 with bet365 to nick it. Finally, it’s hard to see past Hearts at Tynecastle, where Paddy Power make them 8/13 to see off St Johnstone.
Recommended Bets:
Celtic (-2) to beat Berwick-10/11 (Paddy Power)
Dundee to beat Motherwell – 11/5 (bet365)
