Newton Abbot stages a cracking card on Sunday, with an exciting novice chase the highlight. There is sure to be plenty of pace on there and I will be interested to see how Eldorado Allen goes, but the day’s selection comes in the competitive handicap hurdle, in the shape of Meyer Lansky (4:15).
Jonjo O’Neill’s lightly-raced five-year-old ran well in a Worcester bumper this time last year, then shaped well on his first two starts over hurdles, most notably at Chepstow on start two. Off the track since disappointing a little in mid-January, he looks on a fair mark for this handicap debut, and he ought to appreciate this better ground (was a non-runner in February due to soft ground).
This looks wide-open, so hopefully the selection will be available at an each-way price, with Hawk’s Well one of his opponents who interests me. Another very lightly-raced youngster, Emma Lavelle’s son of Yeats is surely capable of better now he enters handicaps, and shaped better than the bare result at Newbury last time. Again, the better ground might help.
