Newbury stages the Marsh Cup on Sunday, where Northumberland Plate second Autralis and Royal Ascot runner-up Selino top the market. Both arrive on the back of a solid effort in strong races last time, so it isn’t hard to see why, but Just Hubert (4:00) was another who I thought capable of going well in the ‘Plate’ last time.
Things didn’t go to plan that day, as he was slowly away and found himself in an impossible position down the far side. William Muir’s four-year-old did make up a bit of ground halfway up the home straight before his effort levelled-out, and if the rain stays away, he could go well at big odds here (16-1 outsider of the field with Betfair at the time of writing). Hollie Doyle takes over in the saddle, on a horse who looked a potential useful stayer-in-the-making last summer. Two of his three wins came on good-to-firm ground, so drying conditions would likely increase his chance.
