A couple of horses who I have been with throughout the season – without much success I must add – clash in the Weatherbys TBA Handicap at Newmarket on Thursday.
Spirit Ridge shaped well on his reappearance (over course-and-distance) before racing a shade keen and disappointing over 1m6f on the July course. Given that he has since had more than three months on the side-lines, it is safe to assume that Amanda Perrett’s Nathaniel four-year-old has had some sort of setback. Still very lightly-raced, it will be interesting to see if the market speaks in his favour.
However, with rain expected, another chance is given to top-weight Buzz (4:45) who is another who disappointed somewhat last time.
Hughie Morrison’s strong-travelling grey had earlier run well in Listed company at York and the pick of his form last year – including when winning a valuable Newbury handicap – came on soft ground. The more rain the better for him and he shouldn’t mind going back up in trip, to 1m4f (doesn’t really stay much further).
