Only five horses go to post for the DIB Connect Handicap at Chester, but four of them clashed over course-and-distance last month under similar conditions. That race was won by Hereby, who has since followed up (when a winner for this column) at Pontefract, where Ralph Beckett’s Pivotal filly again showed a fine attitude.
She is greatly respected as she arrives here at the top of her game and in search of a hat-trick, and a fourth win in all. She is not easily taken on, especially if the rain arrives. However, Gossip Column (4:40) was beaten by just a head here last month and is 3lbs better off with the winner.
Ian Williams’ four-year-old has also won since then, when staying on strongly over 1m2f on easy ground at Beverley. The step back up in trip looks sure to suit and given the turnaround in the weights, he might be able to reverse the form.
