Paul Ferguson has two selections for us on Saturday; Sir Dragonet in the 16:30 and Soto Sizzler 17:15 both at Epsom.
This year’s Epsom Derby looks an open affair, but Sir Dragonet (4:30) looked a potential star when winning the Chester Vase and he can defy his inexperience to win the Classic on just his third start.
The Camelot colt had won a Tipperary maiden just 13 days prior to Chester and he has to prove his ability to handle quicker ground. He is certainly bred to cope with conditions and given how green he still looked last month, there is the plenty of scope for improvement. The draw isn’t ideal (13), but Ryan Moore is sure to drop him in and as we saw at Chester, coming from off the pace certainly isn’t a problem for this horse.
Moore has a good chance of doubling-up in the very next race aboard Sextant, who made an impressive return to action at Ascot recently. In the same race, I also like Soto Sizzler (5:15) who was an impressive winner over course-and-distance on his reappearance and a 5lbs rise seems fair. Really quick ground would be a concern for both, but if conditions don’t dry out too much, both look capable of going well. It has to be presumed that the Sir Michael Stoute-trained four-year-old will head the market, so I’m hoping that Soto Sizzler will be available at an each-way price, and he remains at the right end of the handicap. With that in mind, as well as boasting course winning form, he gets the vote.
