Day two of the fantastic Dublin Festival Racing takes place at Leopardstown on Sunday, where the unbeaten Samcro (1:50) can land the Deloitte Novice Hurdle for Gordon Elliott.
The hugely exciting six-year-old drops back to 2m here, but I don’t envisage it being too much of an issue and he can book his ticket to Cheltenham on the back of making it three-from-three over hurdles.
The winner of Newbury’s Ladbrokes Trophy last time Total Recall (2:25) has been handed entries in the Ryanair Chase, the Gold Cup and the Grand National (which is reportedly his end of season target) yet gets into the 3m handicap hurdle off a mark of just 125. Given the improvement he has shown over fences since joining Willie Mullins, the nine-year-old ought to be very difficult to beat here, despite the large field. Gordon Elliott’s novice Flawless Escape could give him most to think about, as he too looks potentially well treated.
The Flogas Novice Chase looks a really hot contest, but Monalee (3:00) is given another chance, following his fall at the track over Christmas. Henry de Bromhead’s seven-year-old looked a natural on debut at Punchestown and jumped well prior to hitting the deck halfway down the back straight last time. There is always a risk with backing a horse on the back of a fall, but I expected him to be clear favourite here (7-2 at the time of writing) and, despite the depth of quality in opposition, he remains potentially the most exciting runner in the 11-strong field.
