At present, England’s Four Nations campaign looks a little jinxed. Coach Steve McNamara was shorn of the services of Leeds Rhinos trio Jamie Peacock, Danny McGuire and Kevin Sinfield before the tour party even departed for Down Under and now talismanic skipper Adrian Sinfield has gone home with a bicep injury, suffered in the unimpressive 18-18 draw with New Zealand Maori last Saturday.
Unsurprisingly then, England are 7/2 outsiders with bet365 to overcome world champions and Betfred’s 1/5 favourites New Zealand in their tournament opener in Wellington. McNamara’s charges are given a dozen points in the handicaps at 10/11 (Ladbrokes) but even with that cushion, it’s hard to side with them.
In the day’s other match meanwhile, Papua New Guinea are given a whopping 50 points against Australia. That’s a huge amount in any match and although the Kangaroos will prevail comfortably, they could take their foot off the gas and the competition’s underdogs might be worth backing aided by that start, at 10/11 with Totesport.
