Paul Ferguson two selections from Chester for us on Wednesday; Somehow in the 2.40 and Silver Concorde at 3.10. Compare odds and bet.
Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore have supplied this column with a couple of winning fillies over the weekend (Minding and Found) and Somehow (2:40) can continue the trend in Wednesday’s Cheshire Oaks.
The daughter of Fastnet Rock beat a subsequent winner in a heavy ground Leopardstown maiden a month ago and, with the quicker ground sure to be in her favour, she can book her ticket to Epsom by taking this Listed contest, a race O’Brien has won on four occasions since 2008. The selection was trading at 11-10 at the time of writing.
Moore rides Quick Jack in the feature Chester Cup, a horse regular readers will know I have plenty of time for. Runner-up in this last year off a 6lb lower mark, he has a wide draw to contend with this afternoon and, though he is once again respected, preference is for fellow Irish raider Silver Concorde (3:10).
The winner of three of his four starts on the Flat, the eight-year-old was a high-class bumper performer three years ago (won the Champion Bumper, beating Shaneshill, with the likes of Black Hercules, Killultagh Vic, Modus, Value At Risk, Zeroeshadesofgrey and Our Kampfer all in behind) and was most recently seen running in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle behind Altior.
The winner of the Tote November Handicap at Leopardstown the last time he was seen on the level, Dermot Weld’s charge looks capable of going close and is worthy of each-way support at 9-1 (Paddy Power).
At much bigger odds, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Duke Of Clarence go well for Richard Fahey, though he has had a couple of goes at the race previously.
I’ve got a couple of weeks off after today, so enjoy all of the Derby trials over the coming days and I will be back in action on Friday 20th May.
Wednesday’s selections:
2:40 Chester: Somehow; evens William Hill
3:10 Chester: Silver Concorde; 8/1 bet365
