One For The Guv’Nr @ 11/1

Huntingdon’s 32Red.com Handicap Hurdle looks the race of the day on Thursday, in which Paul Nicholls’ recent Wincanton winner Baoulet Delaroque heads the market under his 7lb penalty.

The five-year-old was impressive a week ago, but this is a much deeper race and there are several viable each-way alternatives, the pick being Value At Risk and One For The Guv’Nr.

Things didn’t go to plan for the former over fences early on this season and he was effectively having his first run of the campaign when only ninth at Ascot last month.  That came in a really hot contest and, assuming that took the fizz out of him (can be keen in his races), Dan Skelton’s seven-year-old is certainly capable of going close off a mark of 139.  The slight worry is he might need a shade further.

Assuming the ground isn’t too testing, it could be that One For The Guv’Nr (1:55) possesses a little more speed over today’s extended 2m3f trip.  Nicky Henderson’s Oscar gelding was last seen finishing only midfield at Aintree on Grand National day, but he is certainly worth another chance in this sort of company, having created a decent impression in novice hurdles.

At home on a flat track, he won on soft ground at Ludlow last January and, if he stays this extra distance, he looks capable of going well on this belated reappearance.  The selection was trading at 10-1 overnight so should be backed each-way, while Value At Risk opened 11-1 with a couple of firms, so it may well be a race in which you wish to split stakes.
