Newbury’s three-day Hennessy meeting gets underway this afternoon and the fixture gets underway with a decent looking six-runner novices’ hurdle.
Expensive purchase Modus is likely to be popular, on the back on his debut success at Taunton and the Champion Bumper second certainly sets the standard, but See The World (12:30) is an exciting recruit and can strike on his debut over hurdles.
Emma Lavelle’s five-year-old produced a remarkable performance to win his bumper at Wincanton in late-January, virtually pulling himself up on the turn for home, before regaining his composure to power up the home straight. The son of Kayf Tara gave away a lot of ground on that occasion, so clearly possesses plenty of natural ability.
Provided that was purely down to greenness, he looks like making up into a smart novice hurdler and, in receipt of 8lbs from the previous winners and with the likely soft ground not a concern, See The World looks worth chancing at the odds (available at 9-2 and maybe one to consider in the market w/o the favourite).
Stilleto made his debut for Paul Nicholls at the weekend and another Roger Brookhouse-owned newcomer to Ditcheat Wuff (1:00) can make a winning start for the champion trainer in the amateur riders’ handicap chase.
A huge imposing son of Beneficial, the seven-year-old looked a little un-organised over fences last term, but he remains on a mark from which he can win and, though he could have gone down the novice route, this looks a suitable starting point.
Harry Fry has his horses in top order at present and Unowhatimeanharry (1:35) runs off the same mark as he did when winning at Cheltenham recently and, if reappearing just 11 days later doesn’t find him out, he should be difficult to beat.
The son of Sir Harry Lewis travelled supremely well before scoring on the final day of the Open meeting and he can follow up, with Noel Fehily taking over in the saddle.
The novices’ limited handicap chase is a cracking contest and should be worth noting with the future in mind, while the Grade 2 Bet365 Novices’ Chase is the hottest race run in this division, either side of the Irish Sea, so far this season.
The penalised runners might find it difficult to concede the weight to the bottom three here, with Un Temps Pour Tout bidding to go one better than on debut. I’m slightly surprised he opened up as short as he did, however, and readily prefer Value At Risk (2:10).
Dan Skelton’s six-year-old is pitched in deep here on debut, but he has the size and scope to make up into a high-class chaser and he was a deeply impressive winner here on his debut over hurdles last winter. I was surprised to see him open up as big as 13-2 on Wednesday.
The one I fear most is Beast Of Burden, who would have been a hugely impressive winner on debut at Chepstow, had he not unseated Paul Townend two out. If that hasn’t left it’s mark, I would expect him to go close.
