Monster each way double at York

Paul Ferguson has two selections from York for us on Saturday; Wonder Laish in 14:35 and Quick Jack at 15:45. Compare odds and bet.

Regular readers of my column will know that I’ve long been a fan of QUICK JACK (3:45) and I’m once again siding with him in today’s feature, the valuable Betfred Ebor.

Tony Martin’s classy dual purpose performer landed the Galway Hurdle on his latest start, having earlier finished a creditable second in the Chester Cup. Before that, the Footstepsinthesand gelding finished third in both the Cesarewitch and County Hurdle, all of which is rock solid handicap form.

Today’s trip is probably a shade shorter than ideal, but the six-year-old can once again be expected to travel strongly into the race and should the ground deteriorate, it won’t bother Fran Berry’s mount. He once again warrants each-way support.

Earlier on the card, the Melrose can go the way of in-form trainer William Haggas, who won this in 2012 with Guarantee, courtesy of WONDER LAISH (2:35) who has been off the track since May.

A wide-margin maiden winner at Lingfield when last seen, the Halling colt has missed several engagements recently due to the ground, but ought to relish conditions this afternoon.

Given how strongly he finished at Lingfield, the step up to today’s trip should bring about further improvement and, at double-figure odds, he too rates a decent each-way proposition.

Looking through the field for dangers, Antiquarium looks more than capable of going well, as does Hernandoshideaway who stayed on well to beat the useful Penhill last time. Again, the step up in trip and easier ground ought to prove ideal; I certainly wouldn’t put anyone off splitting stakes with Michael Dods’ runner, in what looks a typically competitive Melrose.

Saturday’s selections:
2:35 York – Wonder Laish; 10/1 Paddy Power
3:45 York – Quick Jack; 7/1 bet365
