The fillies and mares take centre stage at Newmarket on Friday, with day two of the July Meeting staging really strong renewals of both the Duchess Of Cambridge and Falmouth Stakes’.
Albany Stakes winner Illuminate is likely to head the market for the former, but faces the two placed fillies from the Queen Mary, in what should be an informative contest.
In the Falmouth, LUCIDA (3:15) is fancied to beat her elders, despite the race looking pretty deep on paper.
Jim Bolger’s daughter of Shamardal hit the front sooner than ideal in the 1,000 Guineas and, in contrast, was played very late when third in the Coronation Stakes last month. It will, therefore, be interesting to see what tactics are employed here.
A Group 2 winning juvenile, she is fancied to be see off Integral and the trio of French raiders.
Up at York, MIGHTY YAR (3:25) is of interest in the 1m4f handicap, with the step back up in trip likely to suit.
Lady Cecil’s grey looked in need of the run on his return just 13 days ago and has gone well here in the past, notably when runner-up to Kings Fete in this contest off the same mark 12 months ago.
The five-year-old is probably being geared towards another crack at the Ebor next month and looks sure to go well under ideal conditions. If 16 line-up (as expected), he will hopefully be an each-way bet, and he remains on a mark from which he can win a valuable prize.
