18 years after Benny The Dip provided him with his sole Derby success to date Golden Horn (4:30) can give trainer John Gosden a second victory in the Epsom Classic on Saturday.
The unbeaten Cape Cross colt showed a sharp turn of foot to win the Dante in impressive fashion last month, after which his owner decided to stump up the £75,000 required to supplement him for the race.
Originally considered for the Prix Du Jockey Club due to his pace, connections have unsurprisingly been swung in favour of having a tilt at this and, if he does last home, he is very much the one to beat on form. His running style suggests to me that he will get the trip.
Later on the card, the penultimate race of the meeting, the handicap over the Derby trip, looks as competitive as ever, but there are a couple of four-year-olds in there that I feel capable of landing a nice prize this summer.
Oasis Fantasy being one and Ed Dunlop’s charge has shaped well on both starts to date this term. He hasn’t run at Epsom before, but clearly handles the undulations at Goodwood, and he is respected under Richard Hughes.
Slight preference at the prices is for Black Shadow (5:15) who is worth backing each-way at rewarding odds. Amanda Perrett’s New Approach gelding (gelded before his recent return) wasn’t the most consistent last year, but he ran a blinder on this card 12 months ago, when runner-up off a 4lb higher mark.
He also ran well behind The Corsican at Goodwood in late-August and, having dropped to an attractive mark, he looks worth taking a chance on, after shaping with promise on his recent return at Windsor. That race was unsuitably run at a crawl and he will appreciate a stronger gallop this afternoon.
