Paul Ferguson has two selections from Epson for us on Friday; Arod in the 3.10 and Legatissimo in the 4.30. Compare odds and bet.
An impressive winner of the 1,000 Guineas 33 days ago Legatissimo (4:30) is bred to relish the step up to middle-distances and can follow up in this afternoon’s Oaks.
The daughter of Danehill Dancer appeared to win the Newmarket the Classic through stamina and, being out of a Montjeu mare, she really ought to come into her own over this sort of trip. Her form this year is stronger than her main market rival Crystal Zvezda and 3-1 seems more than fair (was trading 7-2 on Thursday morning).
Sir Michael Stoute’s runner was visually impressive at Newbury but that form leaves her with plenty to find, while Jack Naylor, who actually beat the selection last year, comes here just 12 days after running well in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
She, too, ought to relish the trip, but the race might just come a little quickly for her and, of the remainder, the one I’d consider at a price is French raider Al Naamah. The Galileo filly is a full-sister to 2012 Oaks heroine Was and she could easily out-run her odds for Andre Fabre. She rates the each-way alternative to the market leader.
Earlier on the card, if repeating his recent Lockinge third, Arod (3:10) should be difficult to beat in the Diomed Stakes.
Peter Chapple-Hyam’s four-year-old drops in grade here and has course form to his name, when fourth in last year’s Derby. The drop in trip seems to have suited this free-going sort and this looks a good opportunity for the Teofilo colt, who hasn’t won since landing a three-runner conditions race at Leicester last July. He was trading at 2-1 overnight.
Friday’s selection:
3:10 Epsom: Arod; 2/1 William Hill
4:30 Epsom: Legatissimo; 16/5 Betway
