Fergie’s Saturday double top

Paul Ferguson two selections for us on Saturday; The Corsican in the Goodwood 1.45 and Mutarakez in the Haydock 2.35. Compare odds and bet.

An impressive winner by the best part of 3 lengths on his seasonal reappearance at Sandown last month Mutarakez (2:35) looks capable of defying a 10lb rise in the Silver Bowl at Haydock this afternoon.

Brian Meehan’s Fast Company colt powered away in taking fashion last time, proving he handles a bit of ease in the ground and, though his trainer believes he will improve once meeting a quicker surface, today’s conditions shouldn’t be too much of an inconvenience.  The chestnut also won his maiden on good-to-soft ground at Doncaster last year and can take the step up in class in his stride.

Down at Goodwood, it is good to see Remote return to action in the opening Festival Stakes – regular readers will remember that I was a big fan of John Gosden’s son of Dansili during his three-year-old campaign, but it remains to be seen how much of his old ability he retains after 702 days on the sidelines.

Though he has a bit to find on ratings and, ideally there would have been eight horses lining up to make him an each-way bet, it maybe worth taking a punt on The Corsican (1:45) on his first start at four.

Very progressive when last sighted, when winning a handicap over today’s course-and-distance before following up at Doncaster, David Simcock’s Galileo colt always appealed as the type to improve as a four-year-old (didn’t see a racecourse until last May).  He might well need further as the season goes on, but he looks a smart prospect for the season ahead and he is certainly up to winning a Listed contest at the very least.

Saturday’s selections:
1:45 Goodwood: The Corsican
2:35 Haydock: Mutarakez
