Though he has a bit to find on official ratings with all five of today’s rivals Mutamakkin (2:50) is fancied to make a winning return in the Listed King Charles II Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.
Sir Michael Stoute’s War Front colt, who holds a St James’s Palace Stakes entry (three of his rivals are also engaged in Group 1 events), looked smart when beating a clutch of subsequent winners in an easy ground maiden at York last October.
He had earlier shown plenty of promise when fourth to stable-companion Consort in a warm maiden over this course-and-distance. The selection looks a smart prospect and it seems significant that Stoute is prepared to ruin a potentially lenient handicap mark.
Despite being beaten at short odds on his reappearance, another of Mutamakkin’s stable-mates Telescope (2:00) should return to winning ways in the Aston Park Stakes at Newbury.
Dropping into Listed class here, the Galileo five-year-old was in front far too long last time and simply idled. The drying ground is very much in his favour and it will be disappointing if he can’t land this before stepping back up in class.
Of the opposition Elite Army is very much of interest going forward. Not seen since winning the King George V Stakes off a mark of 94 at Royal Ascot 11 months, the Authorized colt steps up in class here, but he can be expected to make an impact in this grade in time. Quite whether he is up to lowering the colours of a match-fit Telescope on his reappearance is another matter, however.
