Haydock’s penultimate novices’ handicap hurdle looks a really competitive affair, but Aniknam (16:20) is a horse I have plenty of time for and he looks worth an each-way bet, at 8/1 with Paddy Power overnight.
A smart bumper performer last season, Phil Kirby’s five-year-old made a winning debut over hurdles at Hexham, despite an indifferent round of jumping. He hurdled more fluently last time when beating all bar the well handicapped Sir Vinski and he travelled with some purpose.
A mark of 120 seems fair and, in the hope that these fixed brush hurdles bring about further improvement in the jumping department (horses can often respect them more), he is given the nod in an open looking contest.
Both Central Flame and, more so, Grove Silver are respected, but the selection beat the former at Hexham and receives a handy 7lbs from the latter, who will also relish conditions. Jennie Candlish’s grey appears to be improving with each run.
