Otago Trail 10/11 @ Newton Abbot

Paul Ferguson has one selection for us on Wednesday; Otago Trail in the Newton Abbot 14:40. Compare odds and bet.

The start of today’s Newton Abbot card looks interesting, with Seven National Army setting a fair standard in the opening maiden hurdle.

Tom George’s six-year-old will be pretty short, however, and faces a couple of useful looking bumper winners, with Pengo’s Bay one to note on his debut over hurdles for Stuart Kittow.  He won at Taunton before finishing seventh in a hot event at Ascot and looks capable of a bold show.

The second race on the card sees Earthmoves attempt to bounce back for Paul Nicholls and Down Royal maiden winner Drumlee Lad make his debut for David Pipe, having been purchased by Roger Brookhouse (also the owner of Seven Nation Army).

It also sees the second start under rules of expensive purchase Adam Du Breteau who boasts some useful point-to-point form, but the trio could struggle to contain Venetia Williams’ Otago Trail (2:40) who has to shoulder a double-penalty.

The seven-year-old won a bumper by 69 lengths last season and also recorded wide-margin successes on his first two starts over hurdles, before finishing third when upped in class at Ascot last month.

The drop in grade and slightly longer trip are positives today and, though he needs to prove himself equally effective on today’s better ground, the son of Heron Island is taken to outclass his seven rivals under Aidan Coleman.
