Live on Skysports 2: Wed 19.45: The rest of the Carling Cup games are contested on Wednesday evening and Manchester United’s trip to Scunthorpe is the televised match, Newcastle travel to Chelsea and cup hopefuls Man City go to West Brom.
Manchester United go on the road in the Carling Cup to Championship side Scunthorpe and Ladbrokes price the Old Trafford giants as 4/9 favs in this tie. First glance would suggest that this is quite a fair price but Sir Alex is bound to drop a few, if not all, first teamers for Wednesday’s trip. Scunthorpe, a mighty 9/1 at Coral, are surely up for a cup upset and whilst they have failed to find a regular rhythm in the league, the League Cup has provided an outlet for them as they have netted 6 times in 2 games. Manchester United obviously offer a different prospect but United’s seeming inability to keep a clean sheet is great news for Scunthorpe and the goals could flow; Boylesports say 13/8 for over 3.5 goals.
Chelsea are a fairly miserly 2/7 at Stan James to beat Newcastle (a 12/1 shot at Victor Chandler) and an upset could be on the cards as Newcastle look to build on the away success at Everton. The team Chelsea put out will not be stronger than Everton’s first XI and the 12/1 is very attractive about The Magpies.
Liverpool, 1/5 at William Hill, could run in a bag full against Northampton, N’Gog is 4/1 to score 1st with Bet365.
Man City face a tricky away tie at West Brom but the Manchester side will definitely view this as a trophy opportunity. The 5/6 quote from Ladbrokes just isn’t tempting though as City’s striking injuries mean that the out of sorts Santa Cruz will probably play and Mancini himself has said up to 7 players will be changed, with one eye on Saturday’s Chelsea game. Paddy Power’s 7/2 on West Brom looks altogether very tempting but perhaps Skybet’s 13/5 on the draw is the way to go.
