Lucy Wadham has saddled three winners (as well as two seconds and two thirds) from just 11 runners since the turn of the year and the Newmarket based trainer has a fine record with her hurdlers at Fakenham.
She will no doubt be disappointed if she leaves the Norfolk venue empty-handed this afternoon, with A Boy Named Suzi (1:35) very much the one to beat in the 2m4f novices’ hurdle.
The seven-year-old built on a fine second at Huntingdon when beating a smart sort at Wetherby last time and, with the step up in trip around this tight track likely to suit, the former smart Flat performer ought to make it two from three over timber.
Rendezvous Peak is sure to be popular in the ATR Toftress Handicap Hurdle after last month’s Huntingdon success, but the other Wadham runner to back is Lanceur (1:05) in a warm looking opener.
The Rail Link gelding was twice a winner on the Flat in France and made a promising start to his new career when chasing home Jollyallan at Newbury’s Hennessy meeting. The winner beat the six-year-old easily, but he pulled 23 lengths clear of the third and finished a lot closer to Harry Fry’s smart prospect than Zip Top did on Boxing Day.
His main market rival was a high-class performer on the level and was pitched in deep on his debut over hurdles. John Ferguson’s runner should be expected to come on considerably for that initial experience, but he will need to, as he was struggling from some way out, and Lanceur may represent a bit of value.
