Stratford stages an interesting national hunt novices’ hurdle on Thursday, where Navan maiden winner Baby King makes his British debut for Tom George and Paddy Brennan.
The five-year-old defied odds on 33-1 when lowering the colours of a fair sort on debut and is respected, but he does have to shoulder a 10lb penalty whilst coming up against several interesting recruits.
Nicky Henderson’s Southwell bumper winner Summer Storm is sure to be popular, but his form has been let down on several occasions since, whilst Vinnie Red shaped with a degree of promise when third in a decent bumper at Doncaster during March.
The vote, however, goes the way of Ozzy Thomas (2:40) who hails from the in-form yard of Jonjo O’Neill.
The Gold Well four-year-old kept on in taking fashion to beat a decent yardstick (chased home a couple of Warren Greatrex’s bumper winners either side of this) at Worcester on debut, with 13 lengths back to a subsequent winner in third.
Beaten at short odds next time under a penalty at Southwell, the form of that defeat now reads a fair bit better, with the winner landing novice hurdles at Stratford in August and Fontwell in October and he actually contested the Persian War last weekend.
If the tissue prices are to be believed (Baby King a short priced favourite) the selection should be backed each-way, in what looks a decent novice hurdle.
