Fergie’s Thursday double

Paul Ferguson has two selections for us on Thursday; McCabe Creek in the Southwell 3.00 and Duke Of Navan in the Carlisle 5.00. Compare odds and bet.

Carlisle stages a cracking beginners’ chase on Thursday, with two exciting recruits locking horns, in the shape of Urban Hymn and Duke Of Navan (5:00), and the latter gets the vote.

Nicky Richards’ six-year-old was a smart novice hurdler the season before last and, while things didn’t go to plan last term, the son of Presenting has long been held in high regard and always considered a chaser in waiting.

Richards told me earlier in the year that it was the intention to have Duke Of Navan ready as early as possible and he could have too much speed for Malcolm Jefferson’s runner, over today’s trip.

Another imposing six-year-old, the Robin Des Champs’ two hurdling successes came over 2m4f and 3m½f, respectively, so Brian Hughes is likely to trying make this a test of stamina from the front.  He opened up 11-10 with Paddy Power last night, whereas the selection was trading at the more appealing 7-4.

Alan King and Wayne Hutchinson had a nice novice hurdle winner yesterday, in the shape of the unbeaten Miles To Memphis, and they team up at Southwell this afternoon with McCabe Creek (3:00).

This looks a fairly warm novices’ hurdle, so it is hoped he is available at an each-way price, as he showed glimpses of promise in a couple of bumpers last season.  The four-year-old caught the eye travelling really well when runner-up on debut, before failing to settle in the Grade 2 at Aintree.

The son of Robin Des Pres looks capable of making his mark over hurdles this season and is worth a small interest.

Thursday’s selections:
3:00 Southwell: McCabe Creek; 3/1 bet365
5:00 Carlisle: Duke Of Navan; 7/4 Paddy Power
