Manchester United trail 2-1 from the first leg in Bayern Munich whilst Lyon take a 3-1 lead to Bordeaux in tonight’s Champions League matches.
It’s fair to say it hasn’t been a great week for Manchester United, who conceded a late winner to Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena last week and then followed up that 2-1 reverse with another in Saturday’s crucial Premiership encounter against Chelsea at Old Trafford.
To compound matters, Wayne Rooney picked up an injury in Germany and so ahead of tonight’s second leg, Sir Alex Ferguson not only needs to pick his demoralised troops up, he also has to persuade them that they can see off their Bavarian opponents without their inspirational centre forward.
They’re 10/11 with Stan James to book a semi-final berth and 4/5 (Victor Chandler) to win on the night but it’s buoyant Bayern, whose own vital domestic showdown at the weekend saw them defeat Schalke to reclaim top spot in the Bundesliga, that could capitalise on United’s slight malaise and add to their woes.
Boosted by the return of their own in-form attacker, Arjen Robben, who catches the eye at 10/3 with William Hill to find the net at any stage, Louis Van Gaal’s men are 10/11 (Betfred) to get through in a clash that is a generous 11/4 (Totesport) to finish all square.
Over in France, Bordeaux will attempt to overturn a 3-1 deficit against Lyon in the Stade Chaban-Delmas but it’s the latter that can tough it out and qualify; an outcome Ladbrokes chalk up at 1/4, although it would be no surprise if the hosts won the match (11/10, 888Sport), by a one-goal margin (3/1, bet365).
