Having missed much tougher assignments in the Summer Hurdle at Market Rasen or the Galway Hurdle, Donald McCain’s Gabrial The Great (5:50) can complete the four-timer at Perth this afternoon.
The former smart Flat performer has got his act together since returning to hurdles in May and, though he still races keener than you’d like, he is going the right way and faces optimum conditions today.
Unless the ground deteriorates overnight, he will be tough to peg back under Sam Twiston-Davies, with his main market rival Gold Futures looking in need of further. Regular readers will know he is also a young hurdler that I like, but I’d have preferred to see him over half-a-mile further in this grade, so Gabrial The Great gets the vote. He was available at 6-4 with Paddy Power last night.
Sticking with handicap hurdlers and Maison De Ville (7:45) is fancied to defy top weight on her handicap debut for Brian Ellison and AP McCoy at Market Rasen.
The six-year-old was impressive when winning a novice hurdle at the track in February, after which she fairly bolted up in an ordinary mares’ event at Sedgefield.
The step up to 3m should not pose any problems and, if she is tuned up after her 158-day absence, she ought to prove difficult to beat.
The rejuvenated Master Of The Hall goes well here, but faces an unexposed and improving mare here. She is taken to land the prize and was generally trading at 7-4 last night.
