Angus Loughran previews this week’s Players Championship and the Italian Open and flags up his best bets for each tournament
In the BMW Italian Open, Edorado Molinari looks a great each way bet at 14/1 at Victor Chandler with 5 places in an event where teenager Mateo Manassero who is going to be a huge star makes his start. It is a huge ask to win on his pro debut but at 40/1 is worth a saver at Bodog
The Players Championship at Sawgrass is one of the year’s big events and after missing the cut last week Tiger Woods faces a huge task this week on a tough course. It’s a long time since he started an event as 9/1 joint favourite (Paddy Power) with Masters Champion Phil Mickelson (9/1 Stan James) and it would be a suprise if the current world number one won this week.
I like the each way chances of Camilo Villegas at 38/1 (Stan James) and Stephen Ames winner here in 2006 and 5th behind Sergio Garcia in 2008 available at 55/1 with Blue Square and 888Sport.
Garcia himself is a tasty 70/1 at Betfred and although out of touch at present can never be ruled out if having a big week with the putter.
Ireland’s Rory McIlroy stunned the golf world with a sensational finish to win at Quail Hollow but Sawgrass will be tough for him this week.
