This afternoon’s Galway Hurdle looks a typically competitive affair, but Pearl Castle (4:55) looks nicely weighted and can go well at big odds for trainer John Quinn.
The four-year-old looked good when twice winning on decent ground at Doncaster and, though he failed to shine in Grade 1 company thereafter (seventh in Triumph), he appealed as the type who would be well suited by the demands of a strongly run handicap.
A winner when reverting to the Flat at York in June, he has since finished fourth in what looked a strong contest (off 92) and, from the foot of the weights under his four-year-old allowance, the Montjeu gelding is capable of a bold show. The selection was trading at 16-1 overnight and should be backed each-way.
Another capable of going well at big odds today is Angel Gabrial (3:10) in the Group 2 Artemis Goodwood Cup.
A hugely impressive winner of the Northumberland Plate last time, the five-year-old clearly faces a more difficult assignment this afternoon, but he won in the style of an improving stayer last time and could easily outrun his odds, despite the rise in class.
Richard Fahey’s northern raider was available at 14-1 on first show last night and is another who warrants each-way support.
