Paul Ferguson has two selections from Goodwood on Wednesday; Made in Rio in the 1.55 and Highland Reel at 3.40. Compare odds and bet.
It’s not hard to envisage many a punter placing multi-bets on day two at Glorious Goodwood, with Kingman sure to be the linchpin of most in the Sussex Stakes.
Regular readers will know that I am a huge fan of John Gosden’s St James’s Palace and Irish Guineas winner, but he is too short to back this afternoon. That said, I thoroughly expect him to confirm himself the leading miler with a dominant performance.
Another ‘shortie’ Highland Reel (3:40) looks the one to beat in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes for Aidan and Joseph O’Brien. The Galileo colt won his maiden by no less than 12 lengths at Gowran and the third and fourth have both won since, the former lowering the colours of the highly-touted John F Kennedy.
The selection still looked rather clueless in the closing stages so there should be further improvement to come and, while dropping back to 7f would not have been the first thing to spring to mind, he looks a potential class act. He was trading at a best price 5-4 on Tuesday evening.
Earlier on the card Made In Rio (1:55) is another that can justify favouritism in the opening 2m5f Goodwood Stakes.
Mark Johnston’s filly is rather unoriginal selection but she won with a ton in hand at Ascot on Friday and is hard to oppose under her 3lb penalty. A winner at Haydock 7 days earlier, the daughter of Captain Rio appears to be thriving and has clearly relished the step up to marathon trips; today’s extra 5f will be a new test for her, but she was not stopping at Ascot and, if in the same form, she will be tough to beat.
The opening selection of the day was generally trading around the 2-1 mark on Tuesday evening, with Bet Victor opening up biggest at 85-40.
