A Tight Race On The Tight Turns Of Montreal

FORMULA ONE BETTING: Live on BBC1: Sun 16.00 The Canadian GP has a solid history of throwing up surprises, will there be more this weekend? Compare odds

Montreal has a fantastic history of throwing up an incident or 3, from Nigel Mansall running out of fuel on the last lap in 1990, Schumacher winning from a penalty amidst chaos in 1998, to Lewis Hamilton winning his first race in 2007.

Throw into that a patched up feud between the Red Bull drivers and a matey rivalry at McLaren and it all promises a lively encouner.

Funnily enough, Montreal is not such a outstanding track. There are a series of long straights and tight corners but the dust that accumulates there causes problems and the harsh winter can make the track bumpy. Deviation from a narrow line can ruin a race for drivers and so requires concentration. All but the best will prosper here.

Hamilton has been installed as 5/2 fav with Paddy Power, closely followed by Vettel at 3/1 (888sport). Vettel’s teammate (and opponent??), Mark Webber, is 4/1 at Totesport.

In a course that demands high speed with fast braking, Jenson Button can shine. He is a fantastic driver with great timing in a great car. The 6/1 about him with Betfred to win is tempting, as is the 6/5 for a podium finish, something he can definitely achieve.

Alonso has come under Italian criticism for a number of mistakes but that does not detract from his ability. Still, the 10/1 with Paddy Power for him to win is probably not long enough to warrant a bet, given a host of opposition.

Vettel and Hamilton also go neck and neck for pole position, both 5/2 (Coral and Boylesports respectively). It really is a coin toss for pole and not one that is easy to predict. It’s been Red Bull every race so far, but that could change.

The race is very likely to involve drama, but unto whom is impossible to say. One strategy is to back a team and share stakes about 2 drivers. Therefore a bet about Hamilton’s 5/2 and Button’s 6/1 to win is the way to go.
