Mens
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are now joint favourite for the Wimbledon title, both 7/4 at Coral.
Federer was given a nasty wake up call on Monday when he came up against Alejandro Falla who pushed him all the way to 5 sets. Falla was actually 2 sets to nil and on the verge of breaking Federer to serve out the match but Federer held his nerve and powered back, winning 6-0 in the 5th. Nadal by contrast eased through to move into the joint fav position.
A fair jump back, Andy Murray rolls in as 15/2 3rd fav at 888sport. Murray did do well in his opener, winning 3 sets to love, but so he should have against 90th in the world. It still remains to be seen if Murray can revive some of the form he had at the turn of the year.
Nicolas Mahut and John Isner are still playing the longest match ever recorded in tennis, which now stands at just over 10 hours at 59 games all in the 5th set. No player lost serve in those 118 games and it is a testament to their fitness and concentration. Stan James actually have 80/1 about Isner to win Wimbledon but it’s impossible to see him having the legs to get through the next round. Both players are evens to beat each other (SkyBet and Bet365).
Andy Roddick comes in at 11/1 with totesport and the excellent Robin Soderling, who should go far in this tournament, is 16/1 at Stan James.
Womens
There were no major disasters in the women’s opening round as the Willaims sisters, Clijsters and Henin all progressed.
Serena is 2/1 fav with Boylesports whilst her sister Venus comes in at 10/3 with Betdaq. The excellent Justine Henin is 8/1 at Blue Square and is definitely one to watch.
Sharapova is still 9/1 with Ladbrokes as she continues a nice return to form for the grasses of SW19, she thrashed opponent and fellow countrywoman Pivovarova, conceding only 1 game.
Ana Ivanovic, the former number 1, crashed out as did all of the British ladies.
