HORSE RACING: Racing guru Alan Thomson takes a good look at some of Saturday’s racing and picks out some fancies at Chester and Newcastle, including the Northumberland Plate.
THE Northumberland Plate is one of the big betting handicaps of the summer and Deauville Flyer looks likely to be sent off a warm order at Newcastle on Saturday. He boasts outstanding claims from the foot of the handicap but CHIBERTA KING (3.05) appeals as an attractive alternative at more rewarding odds.
The Pitmen’s Derby is often a rough race, with countless hard-luck stories, but Chiberta King’s positive running style from a nice berth in stall eight should ensure he is well out of harm’s way up front. He could be called the winner a long way out at Newmarket last month and Andrew Balding has kept him nice and fresh for an assault on this valuable prize.
On the support card, Godolphin’s DORTMUND (4.15) was an expensive failure at Newbury but can recover losses for the boys in blue in what appears an average Gosforth Park maiden.
At Chester, MUJDEYA (2.35) has been hit with quite a stiff mark for her handicap debut after stringing her rivals all over Berkshire when romping away with a Newbury maiden. However, John Gosden’s filly could be open to a little more improvement stepping up to 12 furlongs and looks the most progressive filly in this small field.
Fast-improving CANSILI STAR (3.45) can rattle off a hat-trick (eat your heart out Wayne Rooney!) After beating Sheer Force with plenty in hand at Lingfield last month, Cansili Star got the better of a tremendous duel with Treadwell at Epsom and the form was well advertised when Treadwell lifted the Buckingham Palace Handicap at Royal Ascot.
Tally Ho
Alan
