HORSE RACING: Racing guru Alan Thomson takes a good look at some of Saturday’s racing and picks out some fancies at Sandown, Haydock and Leicester, including the Old Newton Cup.
HILLVIEW BOY (3.25) can give Jim Goldie a notable scalp in the Bet365 Old Newton Handicap at Haydock on Saturday. The six-year-old has been kept under wraps since his mid-May demolition job of a decent field at Hamilton, the unsuitable firm ground causing him to miss some juicy early-summer targets. Richard Hughes is a notable booking and the draw could hardly have been kinder, with Hillview Boy parked on the fence. At a double-figure price, he has the look of a knocking each-way bet if all 17 runners stand their ground and the track is well watered.
Feature event of the weekend is the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown which has attracted a small but select field. My idea of the winner is John Gosden’s admirable mare DAR RE MI (3.10). She has been a model of consistency, having been unplaced only once in 16 career starts (when fifth to Sea The Stars in the Arc). Dar Re Mi has a long racecourse absence to overcome but she has been impressing senior gallop watchers at HQ and appears ready to rumble.
ETON FOREVER (4.50) was an expensive runner-up at Haydock in May but can resume winning ways for the perennial Jarvis/Robinson double act.
At Leicester, BOLLIN DOLLY (3.00) is given the opportunity to recover Newmarket losses from last Saturday when Ted Durcan endured a nightmare passage on Tim Easterby’s mare.
Tally Ho
Alan
