HORSE RACING: Racing guru Alan Thomson takes a good look at some of Saturday’s racing and picks out some fancies at Ascot, Chester and York, including the John Smiths’ Cup.
SATURDAY’S £150,000 John Smith’s Cup at York provides Sir Michael Stoute with another chance to bag the big pot. The master trainer has saddled several leading fancies without success and IMPOSING (3.05) flies the flag this time.
Dogged by injury early in his career, Imposing is now fulfilling his potential and his course victory at the Dante meeting here bodes well. He built on that run with another sterling effort at Royal Ascot and confidence is riding high in the Stoute camp.
In the Group 2 Totesport Summer Mile at Ascot, ALEXANDROS (2.50) must go close. His awkward head carriage at Epsom didn’t help his cause when failing to contain Bushman, but the Godolphin representative should be more at home on this conventional circuit.
At Chester, Mark Tompkins’ filly THEOLA (3.55) should be cherry-ripe after her recent fourth at Pontefract. Few jockeys ride the Roodee better than Franny Norton and he teams up for the first time with LEGAL EAGLE (5.05). Paul Green’s sprinter has led on his last three runs and should be able to hold his pitch from the prime inside draw.
Mick Channon’s stable is in flying form and MEJD (5.40) can round off a good week for the yard.
