GOLF BETTING: Lee Westwood is part of a strong English challenge ahead of the 139th Open Championship at St Andrews but who else could be in the frame at the ‘Home of Golf’?
A strong English challenge could be on the cards in the Open Championship as the event enjoys its’ 150th anniversary at St Andrews. Provided he is fit, Lee Westwood should go well and seemingly edging closer to his first Major, he will have plenty of backers at 20/1 with Ladbrokes.
Two PGA tour wins in the space of five weeks have seen Justin Rose slashed from 50/1 to 25/1 by Victor Chandler to come out on top while Luke Donald, completes a trio of potential contenders from these shores; he’s a 40/1 shot with bet365. Victor Chandler quote 4/1 for any Englishman to come out on top.
Rory McIlroy is rated at 17/1 by Paddy Power but it’s Tiger Woods who is William Hill’s 6/1 favourite to add to his three Open triumphs, two of which came at the ‘Home of Golf’ and with the world number one steadily creeping back towards his best, that price will be popular.
Elsewhere, Charl Schwartzel, at 80/1 (Stan James) has two titles to his name in 2010, although both have been on home soil in South Africa, Adam Scott (80/1, Partybets) is starting to rediscover some form and Italian Francesco Molinari, whose brother Eduardo landed the Scottish Open at the weekend, is a player on the up and looks a cracking each way bet at 66/1 with Betfred.
Meanwhile, a winner on the PGA Tour at the weekend, Steve Stricker is 40/1 at Jaxx.com, US Open champion Graeme McDowell is rated by Totesport at 33/1 to add the Claret Jug to his Pebble Beach success, Ian Poulter (36/1, 888Sport) adds more muscle to the English push and a third Open Championship for Padraig Harrington is available at 25/1 with Betdaq.
