HORSE RACING: Racing guru Alan Thomson takes a good look at some of Saturday’s racing and picks out some fancies at Newbury and Ripon, including the Shadwell Stakes.
GODOLPHIN have had a hit and miss season so far but PRINCE SIEGFRIED (3.55) can give the boys in blue plenty to smile about in the Shadwell Stud Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.
The stable lifted this nice prize last season with Crime Scene and Prince Siegfried has had the misfortune to run into very useful Stotsfold twice this season, the most recent at Sandown when going down by only half a length. He prefers some ease in the ground and conditions have turned in his favour.
SHOSHONI WIND (3.20) could well spike the Richard Hannon big guns in the Weatherbys Super Sprint. Kevin Ryan has booked Franny Norton to do 8st 1lb and his filly boasts some of the strongest form in the race, having run second in the Empress Stakes at Newmarket.
Last year, ALNWICK (5.05) was pipped a short head by Aaim To Prosper in the stayers’ handicap and can go one better under Jimmy Fortune. The ground was on the soft side then and he will relish this serious stamina test.
At Ripon, Ray Beckett’s VULCANITE (4.00) has a great opportunity to record his fourth victory of the year in the Conditions event.
Tally Ho
