The men completed half of Round 2 yesterday and a couple more high profile players fell by the wayside.
6th seed Davydenko was shoved out 3 sets to 0 by Frenchman Gasquet, who jumps up the betting to 80/1 with Bet365. His 3rd round opponenet, Anderson, also knocked out a seed in the form of Bellucci which all falls nicely for talented Gael Monfils – a 150/1 shot at William Hill, surely too long.
The other shock saw Japan’s rising star Nishikori dispose of 11th seed Cilic in a 5 set thriller. Unbelievably this was Nishikori’s 5th win of the week, a testament to his stamina. He is 350/1 at Stan James to win, which is fair enough considering he must face Soderling and Federer in his quarter. 5th seed Soderling, the only player who looks capable of giving a good challenge to the ‘big 4’, is 16/1 at Betfred for the title but only because he is destined to meet Federer in the quarter finals. He is possibly the 3rd best player at the tournament after Federer and Murray and would have stood a real chance at the final if drawn in the other half.
Federer is Bodog’s 7/4 fav and Nadal 7/2 at Coral. Murray plays his 2nd round today against Johnson and should have no problems. A 3-0 win for Murray is a rather inhibiting 1/4 at Skybet but a little lapse in concentration for the Scot, after cruising through his 1st test, could allow Johnson in for 1 set. A 3-1 win for Murray is 5/1 at Victor Chandler and well worth backing at those odds.
9th seed Radwanska toppled in the women’s event, while 10th seed Azarenka had to retire. Aside from that there were no major shocks as the ladies progress to round 3 today. Clijsters still heads the market at 7/2 (Coral), while punters are unsure between Sharapova and C Wozniacki, both 9/2 (Betfred and Bet365). Sharapova is right back on her game but has a date with destiny as she will face top seed C Wozniacki in round 4, should they both progress. That match will surely produce a finalist.
V Williams is 7/1 at Ladbrokes and the talented Jankovic, 4th seed, is 33/1 at Bet365.
