Horse Racing: Racing guru Alan Thomson takes a good look at some of Saturday’s racing and picks out some fancies at Newmarket and Newbury, including the Cesarewitch Trial.
JOHN GOSDEN continues in red-hot form on the back of Arctic Cosmos’ St Leger triumph and he could have the layers running for cover again this weekend. SENATE (3.05) has decent prospects in the highly-competitive Dubai Duty Free Handicap at Newbury. She attracted some hefty wagers at Doncaster and the market confidence was rewarded in scintillating fashion as she strode clear of solid yardstick Times Up. Even though her wide draw is not ideal, Senate looks a three-year-old worth following until the end of the season.
Closer to base, Gosden also fields a couple of potential winners at Newmarket. MARYWELL (2.20) is another filly on an upward curve and she can build on her wide-margin Warwick success last month. Previously, Marywell had hit the bar on a couple of occasions and seemed to appreciate the easier ground at the Midlands track. Hopefully, the track won’t be too lively at HQ.
POWER SERIES (4.40) could keep the Gosden bandwagon rolling along nicely in another tough handicap. The colt hasn’t been spotted in public since running fourth to Dandino at the Derby meeting and his earlier second to Sea Lord at Wolverhampton has since been well advertised.
The Cesarewitch Trial promises to be a fascinating race and RED CADEAUX (3.30) can establish his credentials for the main event. Ed Dunlop pulled him out of an easier event at Yarmouth in midweek because of the soft ground and Red Cadeaux may have most to fear from Lady Hestia.
