Nicky Henderson invariably enjoys a midweek red-letter day this time of year and, in fact, it came on today’s Kempton card a couple of years ago. The champion trainer has farmed the opening novices’ hurdle in recent seasons, too, so it is ominous that he starts West Wizard here, especially given that Darlan and Bobs Worth were both successful in the same race.
He was trading at 2/7 last night and is obviously worthy of close inspection but, from a betting point of view, chasing debutant Royal Boy (3:10) is the one to back, trading at Evs overnight.
The six-year-old chased home Melodic Rendezvous in a decent novices’ hurdle at Cheltenham last December, before finishing third to the same rival in the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle, after which we didn’t get to see him again.
An ex-Irish points winner, the son of Lavirco has long been viewed upon as an exciting recruit to fences and he kicks off life over the larger obstacles in a novices’ handicap. I would be surprised if he did not end up rated a fair bit higher than his current mark of 133 and a clear round should see him make a winning debut.
