Alan King and Philip Hobbs have won this afternoon’s 2m ‘national hunt’ novices’ hurdle at Warwick on four occasions between them since 2005, with Menora scoring for the latter in 2009, and the trainers once again look to have the race between them.
Hobbs saddles Aintree winner Garde La Victoire and his form was franked on Monday when Regal Encore hacked up at Plumpton, but marginal preference is for King’s Gone Too Far (2:50) in the hope that he improves from his hurdles debut at Wetherby.
The five-year-old was workmanlike rather than impressive, but his bumper form is rock solid, especially his debut second, when he got within a length of the exciting Oscar Rock. I expected him to develop in to a leading novice hurdler this season and retain the faith at this stage, though I must point out that Garde La Victoire is one of the best looking horses I have seen in the flesh this autumn. This should be a race to savour.
Up at Hexham, an each-way chance is taken on Walser (3:40) in the concluding handicap hurdle, as he has been on my radar since chasing home smart Flat performer Well Sharp at Wetherby last May.
Placed twice since then, John Wade’s five-year-old surely has a race in him over hurdles and he goes well fresh. Cheek pieces are replaced with first time blinkers this afternoon, so he looks worth a small interest at 8/1 with Ladbrokes overnight (already money for him with other firms last night).
