Paul Ferguson has two selections for us on Thursday; Great Hall in the Haydock 16.50 and Fledged in the 20:35 at Newbury. Compare odds and bet.
Haydock’s Distinction Doors Handicap looks one of the most interesting races of the day on Thursday, with the hat-trick seeking Lion Beacon heading the market, but he faces some potentially useful and unexposed sorts at the trip here, none more so than top-weight Great Hall (4:50) who was available at 9/2 with Skybet this morning.
Brian Meehan’s Halling colt won a Newmarket maiden over 1m4f last time, looking as though he would improve significantly once stepped up to this sort of trip. After his maiden success, the selection was even being spoken of as a possible St Leger contender, so he needs to be going close here off an opening mark of 88 if the final Classic of the season really is to be considered.
Still green in the closing stages last time, he has the scope to improve further for this step up in distance and he ought to be hard to keep out of the frame.
If successful, that would enhance the chances of the day’s second selection Fledged (8:35) in the 1m4f maiden at Newbury this evening.
John Gosden’s well-bred Dansili colt finished ½ a length off Great Hall at Newmarket last time and sets a fair standard. William Buick’s mount looked a sure-fire future winner that day and can get off the mark here.
Thursday’s selections:
4:50 Haydock : Great Hall; 9/2 Skybet
8:35 Newbury: Fledged; 10/11 bet365
